THE RETURN OF CASEY JONES (1933)
Charles Starett, Ruth Hall, George "Gabby" Hayes, Robert Elliott,
Jackie Searl, George Walsh.
Directed by John P. McCarthy.
About the transfer: The transfer was done on a Sprint Spirit. HDTV is short for High-Definition Television, a new type of television that provides much better resolution than current televisions based on the NTSC standard, roughly twice the current resolution. Our HD transfer has been down converted to SD. The remarkable outcome of this process is the retention on remarkable detail that is not even noticed missing in standard transfers. To that end we have included a comparison segment that was done on a Rank, which has a high standard in SDTV. Notice how a plain dress comes alive with detail. Along with this higher resolution, scratches in the vintage print show up too.
Being as it is a old original print you will notice another artifact of HD and pre-1950 film stock, the grain in the film is highly visible. After 1950 Kodak continually kept reducing not only the grain but the silver content in b/w film, which also effects the sharpness of the picture. Technically film stock today is better, but to the human eye it is not.
Our story starts seventeen years after the famous 1900 Casey Jones train wreck and America's entry into WWI. Jimmy Martin, a child when Casey met his end has grown up and like his hero is a engineer. Due to circumstances not of his making, Jimmy does not enlist for WWI. He is soon taunted by enlisted men. Slowly he realizes his job on the home front is just as important. An accident brands him a coward, but he subsequently stops a major train wreck becoming a new Casey Jones.
